“Is it possible that the Earth turns, the Stars dance, the Comets sing, not because of gravity and Einstein’s laws but because of the power of Love?” from The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider & Joost Elffers

“Yasmin has been one of my best friends for years, and she’s one of the few people who is as comfortable with silence as I am. We don’t need to fill our time together with words anymore, and it’s amazing to have someone who knows you that well. Yasmin is incredibly witty, and she is just as good at bantering back and forth about utter nonsense as she is at having deep philosophical conversations. She’s also very shy, so I am very fortunate to know her as well as I do. Behind her quiet first impressions she is a wise, unique, hilarious person who I am proud to call my best friend. We spend a lot of time taking photos together, though she isn’t a photographer she has spent enough time with me to be incredibly helpful on photo shoots. This was taken on one of our adventures through the forest, and I love the determined yet serene look in her eyes.” – Emily D

An Interview with Yasmin

Q. What is your best memory/moment from one of your past birthdays?

A. One of my favourite birthday memories is from my sixteenth birthday. My friends threw me a surprise party at my house. A couple of us stayed up until 5am and I ate seventeen cupcakes throughout the night.

Q. How about the worst? And why?

A. When I was in elementary school my parents took me shopping to celebrate one of my birthdays. I hated shopping then, and I still do. It definitely wasn’t my favourite way of celebrating!

Q. What was the present you’ve received for your birthday that most surprised you?

A. My friends were planning a surprise party for me at one of their houses. They were trying to fill a pinata, but they ran out of candy so they snuck into my house while I was in the shower and stole some of mine. Then one of them came over to casually ask what my favourite pinata shape was. Somehow, I still wasn’t expecting the party or the butterfly pinata that I was gifted with.

Q. Is there one food or dish that you insist on eating during your birthday celebration?

A. Usually I go out to dinner at Swiss Chalet with my family.

Q. What do you believe is the most important aspect of celebrating a birthday?

A. On my birthday I most enjoy being surrounded by my friends and family.

Q. Do you/your family/culture have any traditions/rituals/ceremonies that are performed to celebrate birthdays? What is it?

A. No.
