“We are not always aware of what a tremendous effect not only our actions, but also our thoughts, have on our environment” from The Secret Language of Birthdays by Gary Goldschneider & Joost Elffers

“When planning Brooke’s photo, she knew from the get go that she wanted something that incorporated her fascination and connection with the spirit world.   Brooke has always been enchanted by the veil between our world and the next, and senses that it is quite thin for her. She believes that birthdays act as a reminder to take stock in our lives, and to be grateful that we are here – living and breathing. Brooke and I share a love for abandoned spaces, so what better backdrop to shoot her otherworldly portrait? Her daughter Smyth makes a ghostly guest appearance in the image. I had an amazing time on this shoot!” – Jeannette B

An Interview with Brooke

Q. What is the best memory you have from a previous birthday?

A. I have a terrible memory. However, I remember sitting in a little cafe in Perth Australia with a wonderful group of friends and blowing out the candles on an amazing chocolate pie that one of them had made for me. That was a great birthday.

Q. How about the worst? And why?

A. My nose began to bleed just as I blew out the candles on the cake at my 5th birthday party. Blood went all over the pink frosting and all over the other children.

Q. What was the present you’ve received for your birthday that surprised you most?

A. A beautiful Mary Frances purse called “Neon Lights”. That was unexpected.

Q. Is there a food or dish that you insist on eating on your birthday?

A. I only insist on not having to make it.

Q. What do you believe is the most important aspect of celebrating a birthday?

A. Remembering to be grateful that you are having a birthday. There’s always the alternative. Birthdays are blessings.

Q. Do you have any traditions or thing you always do to celebrate a birthday? What is it?

A. Not so much, however, I make a huge deal out of my daughter’s birthdays. It’s always quite a celebration. I’m actually sewing hand made bows onto fabric cat tails, as I answer these questions, for my youngest’ upcoming party. Seriously, it’s/I’m out of control.
